Person in a yellow banana costume talking on a phone beside a minor car crash on a sunny street

Most Halloween parties end with a sleepy ride home and a costume tossed on the bedroom floor. Stephanie Oropeza’s night ended differently. She was standing outside an Orlando bar in a full banana suit with a phone to her ear, calling for help after an SUV tore through the restaurant’s patio.

  • Stephanie Oropeza and her fiancé were heading home from a Halloween party around 4 a.m. Saturday when an SUV crashed into The Moderne Bar on East Colonial Drive in Orlando.
  • She called for help while still dressed as a banana, and the video of it spread so fast that some viewers thought it was AI.
  • Nobody was hurt, but the owner thinks fixing the custom fence alone could cost up to $50,000.

A Ride Home That Took a Strange Turn

Oropeza and her fiancé were driving home after a Halloween party around 4 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, when they saw a driver on the opposite side of the road. They watched the vehicle slowly veer straight into The Moderne Bar, an upscale bar and grill on East Colonial Drive in Orlando’s Mills area.

She later said that at first, she and her fiancé were simply in shock. That’s a fair reaction to watching an SUV roll through a restaurant’s outdoor dining area in the middle of the night. The couple didn’t keep driving, though. They stopped to help, and Oropeza called for help while still wearing her bright yellow costume.

Lots of people would freeze in that moment or assume someone else had already called it in. She skipped all that and made the call.

A Video Too Bananas to Believe

The Moderne’s video caught her on the phone in full costume. Owner Michael Nguyen posted the clip online, and it took off.

Many viewers couldn’t believe what they were seeing. Nguyen said people asked if the footage was AI or if it was some kind of prank. The answer was no. In Nguyen’s words, it was just a lone banana wandering the streets of Mills at 4:30 in the morning, saving the day and reporting the crash.

Oropeza found out she’d become famous the next morning. She woke up, searched to see if anyone had posted about the crash, and found herself in headlines under a new nickname, the “banana hero.”

A few outlets borrowed an old saying and pointed out that not all heroes wear capes. This one wore a peel.

How the Moderne Found Its Banana

When the clip first started spreading, the bar didn’t know who the woman in the costume was. The Moderne went looking for its mystery banana hero and eventually tracked her down.

To say thanks, the restaurant treated Oropeza to a free meal. She said the attention felt nice. She also said she hopes the story spreads a simple message about stepping in when you see someone who needs help.

It’s a sweet ending to a messy night. The owner had just watched the patio get wrecked and still made a point of finding the stranger who helped and buying her dinner.

Heavy Damage, but Everyone Walked Away

Nobody was injured in the crash, which is the best news in this whole story. The restaurant didn’t get off so easy.

Nguyen estimated that repairing the custom fence alone could cost up to $50,000. Six tables were destroyed, along with dozens of chairs from the outdoor seating area. That’s a lot of furniture to replace all at once.

The Orlando Police Department didn’t immediately share more information about the crash when asked.

Be the Banana Next Time Someone Needs Help

Strip away the costume and the jokes, and this story is about someone doing the right thing at a strange hour. Oropeza saw a driver on the wrong side of the road, saw the crash, stopped, and called for help. She didn’t wait to look normal first.

Most of us will see a crash at some point, maybe on the drive home from a party or on a quiet road late at night. You don’t need training or a superhero outfit to be useful. Make sure you’re safe, call for help, and tell the dispatcher where you are and what you saw. If a driver looks like they’re heading the wrong way, report that too. A few seconds on the phone can get help moving fast.

And if you happen to be dressed as a piece of fruit when it happens, the dispatcher won’t know. Go ahead and make the call.
