Disney’s Biannual fan convention the D23 Expo is occuring this weekend. Closing out Saturday’s live-action film panel was Lucasfilm. Included in the presentation was discussions about the entire film slate, the announcement of Collin Trevorrow as director of Episode IX, the creation of Star Wars Lands at both Disneyland and Disney World parks, but also finally some news about the first anthology film, Rogue One.
The first news is that in terms of marketing they appear to be doing away with the use of the term “Anthology” and instead labeling these films as “A Star Wars Story.”
The second big news was that we had a video from Gareth Edwards on set between filming the first and second scenes of the film. They were on location in a desert environment with rocky outcroppings. I would be a tad surprised if Tatooine featured in the film, but given how often the planet appears in Star Wars stories it isn’t out of the realm of possibilities.
The third big news was the announcement of the cast, most of which has been rumored for a while but with a few surprises. The officially announced cast for Star Wars: Rogue One is
Previously Jones had been the only cast member announced.
The fourth and final bit of Rogue One news was the release of an on set and in costume image of part of the cast. The image you can see below was taken by photographer Jonathan Olley and features, Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna, Felicity Jones, Jiang Wen and Donnie Yen.
Look for a detailed break down of this image soon.
